Review: A Walk in the Park in Ham & High, The best books for gardeners in 2016

screen-shot-2016-12-15-at-20-26-10

“Wittily written and wide-ranging, Travis Elborough’s A Walk in the Park, the life and times of a people’s institution (£18.99, Jonathan Cape) restores this review to the realm of dreams. Starting with the Epic of Gilgamesh, Elborough veers into an hallucinatory visit to Le Petit Trianon and Marie-Antoinette, before returning to England via Charles II’s fantasy of a Le Notre garden of his own. It takes more than a century’s worth of royal, aristocratic and then commercial pleasure gardens to arrive at the Victorian era, with its bold, imaginative creation of public parks. Idealistic and moralistic from the outset, these parks face a very uncertain future. This book underlines how precious, and vulnerable, they are.”

Event: A Walk in the Park talk at Clissold House, Clissold Park N16 on Sunday 27 Nov 1.30 pm

Screen Shot 2016-10-28 at 10.28.05.png

“Continuing our series of Sunday afternoon talks in the magnificent drawing room of Clissold House, we are pleased to announce the third of three talks for 2016.

Doors open 1.30pm. Ticket price includes a glass of wine or a soft drink.

Parks are such a familiar part of everyday life, you might be forgiven for thinking they have always been there – and that they always will. In fact, the roots of even the most humble neighbourhood park lie in age-old battles over land and liberty. From their medieval life as private royal hunting grounds and private estates to their modern incarnation as public spaces teeming with activity, as Clissold Park is today, acclaimed author Travis Elborough traces their extraordinary history in an illustrated talk based on his new book, A Walk in the Park.

Elborough is a Stoke Newington resident and Clissold Park user; he was also the Chisenhale Gallery Victoria Park Residency artist for 2014-15.”
