It may come as a surprise to learn that none of the members of Saint Etienne – that quintessentially ‘London’ of London bands – was born in the capital. If ever a band was defined by a city, it is St Etienne. It has exerted a profound influence, colouring much of the band’s creativity. The clues were there, in the Billy Liar quoting sophomore effort, So Tough: ‘a man can lose himself in London.’
There is another nod towards Billy Liar in the band’s filmic love-letter to London, How We Used To Live: montage shots of post-war housing – high-rise flats, leafy suburban vistas, culled from hundreds of hours of documentary footage – are underscored with archive sound-bites from Housewives’ Choice. Dragnet – Noir and Mystery Festival 12 July, Village Green, Chalkwell Park Southend
‘A new pilot literary festival will premiere at this year’s acclaimed Village Green, held on July 12th in Chalkwell Park. Regularly attracting audiences of over 30 000 the debut of Dragnet will take the form of a literature festival, unlike any other, which celebrates specifically the very best of literary noir crime and mystery and the other artistic enterprises that the genre has inspired.
Dragnet is the concept of writers Cathi Unsworth, Travis Elborough and Syd Moore who developed the idea when they met at Metal’s Shorelines literary festival in October last year. ‘

After the screening we’re delighted to welcome director Paul Kelly and writer Travis Elborough. Plus short film OXFORD, 1958 (18 mins) A look at the traditions and students of Oxford University and the character of this city of ancient buildings and young minds.
Using archive footage from the British Film Institute, HOW WE USED TO LIVE is a love letter to London, written in the language of its social history from the 1950s to the 1980s.
In a previous life director Paul Kelly played with indie group Saint Etienne, and their vocalist, Sarah Cracknell, and keyboard player, Pete Wiggs, provide a fittingly energetic soundtrack to the images of a city in constant motion and development.
Ian McShane’s wryly perceptive narration charts the progress that we may have taken for granted as London clambered out of the bleak aftermath of World War II and towards the harsh realities of Thatcherism.
Kelly’s skill is in choosing the most expressive images, whether of familiar but changing cityscapes or of punks being gleefully obnoxious. His film exudes an intoxicating realism.’
